History

Business Development is bucking the economic trend in Scott City these days. As a community that depends largely on the success of farming and livestock, this western Kansas town is growing! The progressive nature of Scott City and the people who live here is not a new trend, however.

From its beginning in 1885, Scott City has been unique. A woman named Maria DeGeer ventured from Chicago to found Scott City proper. Early records and journals indicate settlers in Scott City were “hearty, progressive, visionary people who were tested many times through drought and blizzard conditions. These individuals who had stamina and faith stayed. They possessed a love of this prairie and passed it to their descendants.”
